About Veryan

Veryan is located six miles south east of Truro, the village is on the Roseland Peninsula which has been designated as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The village was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the manor of Elerkey. This name was derived from Elerk which is Cornish for swan. Veryan’s claim to fame lies with the five round thatched houses built in the early 19th century by the Reverend Jeremiah Trist. These roundhouses each have a cross on top and they stand two at either end of the village and one in the centre. The legend goes that they have been built round so that there was no corner for the Devil to hide. Likewise the crosses on the roofs were intended to repel the Devil from Veryan. Not only is Veryan a pretty unspoilt Cornish village with its famous roundhouses but it is located approximately one and half miles from a string of sandy beaches, like those at Carne and Pendower.
