About NewquayToday Newquay is a famous tourist and surfing destination but there was an anicent settlement here and there is evidence of an iron age coastal fort to be found in the cliffs and caves at Porth island.The Cornish name for the town is Tewynn Pleustri, it has a boundary to the west of the Gannel River and salt marshes and to the east by the Porth valley. According to the 2001 census Newquay had a population of 19,423 but this number can be multiplied by nearly five during the tourist season. Due to its sheltered position Newquay was once just a fishing village and by the 15th century the village was called "Towan Blystrathe' the word Towan means sand hill or dune in Cornish.The shelter of the Towans still left anchorage exposed to winds from the North East so in 1439 the local Burghers applied to Bishop Lacey of Exeter for funds to build a new quay from which the town gets its current name. Life as a fishing port culminating in the arrival of the great pilchard shoals in the 18th century and the galvanising cry of Heva from the whitewashed Huer's Hut which still stands above the harbour. Newquay’s present flag or insignia depicts two pilchards. The town is no longer involved in pilchard fishing but a small number of boats still fish for the local edible crab and lobster. As a holiday resort Newquay has so much to offer, there is an attractive town, and eleven glorious sandy beaches with a full range of water sports. Now often called The Surfing Capital of Britain the town has an array of surf shops, board manufacturers and hire shops. Fistral Beach plays host to major international sufing competitions,. Newquay is also famous for the "Run to the Sun" event, which always takes place in May when hundreds of people arrive at the town in Volkswagen Camper vans, Beetles and other custom cars. Major holiday attractions in the area include the Blue Reef Aquarium which is the ultimate undersea adventure "Walk through" the sea in the main attraction a 250,000 litre display which houses black and white tip reef sharks, stingrays, moray eels, giant groupers and a whole host of brightly coloured reef fish. Another watery attraction is Newquay WAater Worls which a popular all weather attraction. Fun is to be found all under one roof, a Fun Pool with 60 foot water flume, animal slide, mushroom fountain and waterfall feature, children's slide and 25 metre swimming pool. Newquay Zoo is a good family day out , the animals and exhibits will enthral the children and Trenance Gardens with its brilliant show of flowers and subtropical vegetation is a good place to relax.The nearby Trenance Lake offers boating for children and adults and there is bird sanctuary and Lakeside café Also on offer are the Tunnels Through Time which recreates fabulous Cornish stories and legends. There are realistic life size figures, fantastic sound and lighting effects, to bring the past to life. Newquay is in a good location right in the centre of the north coast of Cornwall. The area has easy access to the A30 making it an ideal touring centre for the county. The mild climate at Newquay has extended the tourist season and the place is usually busy. |
